Which social media platform should I use for my small business?

By 3rd August 2020November 17th, 2021No Comments

One of the things I get asked most as a social media manager is about which social media platform they should be on when it comes to their business? “Do I need to be on Twitter?” “I don’t know anything about Instagram so I am not on there.” “Do people even use Facebook anymore?” They begin to feel overwhelmed by social media for their business because they just can’t manage to be everywhere and to know how to use all of the platforms well.

Well guys, there’s good news – you do not need to be on all the platforms. Here are my top three tips when deciding which to focus on for your business.

1. Consider Your Audience

The first thing to remember is that none of this is about you. Sadly, you can’t just be on the social media platforms you enjoy using personally.

You need to be where your audience are spending their time. Consider who you are targeting with your product or service; how old are they, are they male or female, which platforms are they using the most? If you’re targeting teenagers then you’re going to need to learn how to use TikTok or Snapchat. If your audience is 60+ then Facebook is the way to go. Find out where your audience are spending time then plan to be there too.

As part of my social media strategy package, we delve deep into this, even writing profiles for different members of your audience. We’ll look at where they are, and where you should be focussing your time and efforts.

2. You Do Not Need To Be On Every Platform

Often people think it’s better to be on all the platforms than not but this is pointless. If your audience is not on Twitter, there is absolutely no point spending your time posting content there. We are all time poor as small business owners and we need to focus our time where the money is. Let’s face it, that is why we’re doing any of this right?

3. Be Consistent

Consistency is key when it comes to social media marketing so decide how many posts per week you can commit to for each off your chosen platforms and stick to it. This way, your audience will know what to expect from your channels.

With my content planning package, you can allow me to take this off your plate completely. We will complete a social media strategy when we begin working together and I will plan all of your posts for you. I will do all of this with your audience in mind. We’ll post more of what they enjoy and less of what they don’t. And we’ll post consistently each week.
